Every contractor we talk to asks some version of this: should I spend my budget on Facebook and Instagram (Meta Ads) or on Google Ads? We run both for trades across Vancouver and BC, and we run them for our own flooring company too. The short answer is that they do different jobs.
Google Ads: catch people who are already looking
Google Ads show up when someone searches for what you do, for example “window replacement Vancouver” or “epoxy garage floor Surrey”. These people already have the problem and are actively shopping.
Google Ads are great for
- Urgent or high-intent jobs (repairs, replacements, “near me” searches)
- Trades people search for by name: roofers, painters, plumbers, window installers
- Getting calls quickly once the campaign is live
The downsides
- Clicks can be expensive in competitive Lower Mainland markets
- You’re competing side by side with every other contractor on the same search
- You can only reach people who are already searching
Meta Ads: create demand before they search
Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) show your business to homeowners in your area while they scroll, before they’ve started shopping. You’re not answering a search, you’re starting the conversation.
Meta Ads are great for
- Visual trades: epoxy floors, painting, renovations, landscaping, windows and doors
- Video ads that show your crew and your finished work
- Targeting specific areas, home types and audiences
- Building trust before the homeowner ever compares quotes
The downsides
- Leads need fast follow-up because they are earlier in the decision
- Weak creative (stock photos, generic text) performs poorly
- You need a way to filter out tire-kickers
So which is better?
If you only have budget for one, ask yourself one question: do people search for my service when they need it, or do they need to see it to want it?
- Mostly searched (urgent repairs, specific installs): start with Google Ads.
- Mostly visual (finishes, upgrades, makeovers): start with Meta Ads and strong video.
- Growing past one crew: use both. Google catches people who are ready now, and Meta keeps your pipeline full for next month.
The part most agencies miss: what happens after the lead
Neither platform books jobs on its own. The contractors who win are the ones who call back within minutes, ask the right questions and follow up on quotes. That’s why we set up lead tracking and follow-up alongside the ads. We run Prime Choice Flooring ourselves, so we know a lead is only worth something once it turns into a booked job.
