Thought I'd share with the forum, how to use a Live XP disk to run
diagnostics and Anti Virus on a computer that's in need of restoration.
To do so, I'll be using a free program called Ultimate Boot CD 4
Windows, otherwise known as UBCD4WIN. This is a legit program and is
100% legal and authorised by Microsoft.
**Please note that at the time of writing this
guide, I was unable to upload any images. I will try to add them later
but may have to do so in a seperate post. I'll mark on the guid where a
picture will be made available.**
***Important note before we begin***
This process is totally legal and approved by Microsoft. However, in
order to stay within the parameters of legality, you need to be using a
GENUINE XP disk or ISO image. Under no circumstances do I or this forum
condone the use of Pirated or illegaly obtained Operating Systems.
Note that by using a non-genuine disk, you will not be legible for
Microsoft updates.
1. First of all we need to get the files from
your XP disk onto your harddrive so we can edit them with the UBCD4WIN
software. You'll need to create a folder on the root of your C drive,
call the folder something like 'ExtractedXP'.
To copy from a Genuine XP disk, insert the disk into your computer.
Open up My Computer and right click on the drive that contains the XP
disk, selecting explore from the dropdown menu. Select all the files
and copy them to the folder you created earlier on the root of C.
If you have an ISO image of XP, you can use a program like Undisker <– Just use the trial version , use this program to extract the image to a folder on the root of C.
2. The next step is to download and install the UBCD4WIN software which is available from HERE.
3. Once you've downloaded and installed the software, we're
ready to begin the process. Navigate your way to the installation
folder of UBCD4WIN, and double click on the UBCD4WINBuilder.exe <– Note that if you are using Vista or Win 7 you'll need to right click and run as administrator.

Within the new window, you'll need to select the source of the XP
installation. This will be the folder that you created in step one and
should be C:ExtractedXP.
For now, you can ignore the seconf line, 'Custom'. You need to change
the Output to something meaningful like, 'XPBootable'. This is where
the ammended files XP files will be stored.
Under Media output, select Create ISO Image. You can store this ISO
anywhere, but for the sake of this guide, let's put it in the XPBootable
folder.
4. Now for the really clever bit. Before we create the ISO
image, we're going to update the Anti virus software that's going to be
contained on the disk. This is really useful for when you need to
tackle a virus using this disk, you can make sure the virus definitions
are up-to-date before making the disk.

To do this, click on the Plugins button from the bottom left of the
window. Wait a second or two for the Plugins window to pop up. When it
does, scroll down the page until you see Anti-Spyware. In the main
display window, you will see the name of the programs and in <>
brackets, it will say Press Config to update. Now you just need to simply highlight the software you wish to update, and press the config button.

If you scroll down to Commercial software, you can actually install paid for anti virus if you have a key for it.
5. Once you have made the changes you wanted, you can close the
plugin window and return to the main UBCD window. We are now ready to
create the ISO, press the build button. A new window will pop up as the
program create the new ISO image. This step may take several minutes.
6. Once the ISO has been created you are ready to burn it to a
disk for use. There are many programs out there that can burn an ISO to
CD. I like CDBurnerXP, which is available from HERE.
7. Once you have downloaded and installed your ISO burner of choice, you need to insert a blank cd to your computer, open up the CD burning software select the newly created ISO and burn it to the CD.

8. Congratulations! You have just created a UBCD4WIN, one of
the most powerful PC diagnostic and repair tools available! You will be
using it A LOT!!
